Eelskin
In the mid 1980s eelskin burst onto the fashion industry with a shockwave never before seen in the leather industry. Soft and supple and easily dyed into a wide myriad of vibrant colors, eelskin was a success like no fashion leather before it. Coupled with the color variety, designers were thrilled with the ease of sewing and the great abundance of available hides. Eelskin was everywhere from fashion bags and accessories to shoes, briefcases, jackets and yes even golf bags. Twenty five years later, with the advent of more exotic leather hides it can safely be said that eelskin began the revolution in the leaher fashion world.
In a true sense eelskin also helped the leather industry enter the eco friendly era of renew and recycle and greatly reduced waste in the food industry as well. The traditional leather hides that preceeded it such as cowhide, pigskin and lambskin had done an admirable job of eliminating waste in the food and leather production area. No more waste. Now, with eel a popular delicacy around the world and the hides no longer disgarded, fashion and environmentalism an come together in a major way. Bravo!
Does eelskin demagnetize credit cards? No, but the story is fun to tell and survives today in spite of volumes of data to refute it. Try reading our account under LEATHER FACTS on our home page or go to www.snopes.com (type in eel in the search box) if you want the facts. Otherwise, enjoy spreading the fantasy.
